Project Description

Department of Botany is an integral part of Science College Autonoums, Hinjilicut, a more than 57 years old premier institution of the state of odisha. The Prestigious institution started functioning from the year 1963. Botany as a subject at Undergraduate level has started from 1974 and post graduate level has started from 2019.Generally the students has a rural background. It has glorious record of outstanding performance under Berhampur University. Our students have proved their excellence across the globe in various fields ranging from academics to administration. We are proud of our aluminis. NAAC in 2006 and 2017, adjudged the department as one of the best Department in the college during its grading in relation to staff, students, academic curriculum, infrastructure and Laboratory facilities.

Under Graduate Degree (B.Sc.)

About Course Programme:

The Under-Graduate (B.Sc.) curricula in Botany are of Three-year duration with total of 2750 marks. The system of examinations is of semester pattern. There will be six semesters consisting of four theory papers for First  and Second semesters, five theory papers for Third and fourth semesters, four theory papers for the Fifth semester and three theory papers sixth  Semester. All Core Course, Generic elective and DSE papers has a practical component carrying 25 marks each (1st to 6th) Semester. In addition, students have to carry out a project work to be initiated in the fifth semester and shall be completed in the sixth semester. Each theory paper with practical component carries an internal assessment of 15% and paper without practical carries an internal assessment of 20% of the total marks. Each theory and practical examinations will be of three hours duration. The project work carries 100 marks, 60 for the project paper and 40 for the seminar presentation/viva voce.

Master Degree (M.Sc.)

About Course Programme:

The Post-Graduate (M.Sc.) curricula in Botany is of two-year duration with total of 2000 marks. The system of examinations is of semester pattern. There will be four semesters consisting of four theory papers in First, Second, Third semesters and three theory papers in Fourth Semester. There will be one practical paper in each semester (First to fourth). In addition, students have to carry out a project work to be initiated in the third semester and shall be completed in the Fourth semester. Each theory paper carries an internal assessment of 20% of the total marks. Each theory examinations will be of three hours duration. Each practical examinations will be of six hours duration.  The project work carries 100 marks, 50 for the Seminar presentation in first three semesters and 50 for the Project paper & seminar presentation/viva vose.

The department has one seminar library. The departmental seminar library has about four hundred text books.

Student Project Work

It is mandatory in the part of the student to do project work and submit the report in the 6th Semester as envisaged in the prescribed course of studies of B.Sc.

Study Tour

Yearly at least one study tour is arranged with support of the college. In the study tour programme the students under the guidance of faculty members are required to survey the flora of the adjourning region to collect specimen and prepare a report. This has been a part of B. Sc and M. Sc. curriculum.

THE UGC SPONSERED EXTENSION PROGRAME

  1. On 27-11-2015 the programme was inaugurated by our principal sir Dr. SachidanandaPatro at village Nuagada. The programme was guided by H.O.D Dr. Prafull Kumar Pattnayak. A door to door campaigning to introduce the people about the medicinal benefits of spices of kitchen and local medicinal plants to the villagers. All the students of +3 Final year (Hons.) & +3 1st year (Hons.) of our department participated in the programme. The students were divided into ten groups with a senior student as leader. Some students described the literature prepared for the purpose. The students have done practice for one week ahead before conducting the program.
  2. On 27-11-2015 the programme started at 9 A.M. in the morning. The students interacted with the people in groups and explained them about the benefits of our locality. The plants which are available in plenty in our area like Sacred basil, Bel, Karela, Neem, Posaruni, Patalagaruda. The kitchen spices like Zinger, Garlic, Onion, Cloves, Chilli, Cardamom, Cinnamon, Turmeric, Black piper, Cumin seeds, Fenugreek seeds, and Bay leaves.The people expressed their happiness by listening the students and the collected opinions from different houses. Students too enjoyed the interaction with the public. The programme was a successful one.
  3. On 28-10-2018 the extension programme was held at Nimigaon, Hinjilicut block on “Entrepreneur development program on Green Skills”, organized by Ganapati Sabat Foundation. The program started at 10A.M. in the morning and inaugurated by the Scientist, NCSTC Binod Chandra Sabat. The students along with the faculty members participated in groups and get the knowledge of making of bio-fertilizer and organic farming.
  4. From 24th February to 26th February 2019 the extension programme was held at Nimigaon, Hinjilicut block on “communication of science and technology among unreachable rural area using folk media” program organized by Ganapati Sabat Foundation. The program started at 9 A.M. in the morning on24th February 2019. It was inaugurated by the Scientist, NCSTC Binod Chandra Sabat and B.D.O of Hinjilicut. The students along with the faculty members participated in groups and get the knowledge to get rid of the various superstitions through folk dances and dramatic activities to the local peoples. On 26thFebruary, A door to door campaigning was held by the students along with faculty members to introduce the people about the medicinal benefits of spices of kitchen and local medicinal plants to the villagers.

SCIENCE EXHIBITIONON

  1. From 1st February to 3rd February 2021 the science Exhibitionon on “Recent advancment in science and technology” was held at Science College (auto) Hinjilicut. The program was organized by Ganapati Sabat Foundation and sponsored by NCSTC, Department of science and technology ,Govt of India. The program started at 10 A.M. in the morning on 1st February 2021. It was inaugurated by the Scientist, NCSTC, DR. Binod Chandra Sabat, prof R.C.Chaudhary, prof P.K..pattanaik. On that day the science Exhibition competition was held .The students of our college along with students from GOVT ITI Pochilima, Saraswatisisu Bidyamandir & Brundabana Bidyapitha of HINJILICUT were participated in the events. Among 34 projects exhibited, best 3 were selected for 1st ,2nd ,and 3rd The consolation prizes were given to other 5 projects to inspire towards science.
  2. On 2ndFebruary, a seminar was held observing “world wetland day”. Prof M.K.Mishra of Berhampur University, Dr. S.P.Nayak of KM College and Dr. D.Mahapatra were the resource persons.The students along with the faculty members participated in the seminar and get the knowledge of wetlands and its uses.On 3rdFebruary the validatory function was done.
  3. On March 8th 2021 a seminar was held at Nimigaon organized by Ganapati Sabat Foundation and sponsored by NCSTC, Department of science and technology, Govt of India. The students of P.g Dept. of Botany of our college and all the Faculty members are participated in the seminar, on behalf of International Women’s Day.

 INDUCTION MEETING

Each year , in the beginning of the session,  the department organizes an Induction ceremony to induct the freshers by the senior students of the department. Usually the inauguration of the Induction Meeting is done by honorable Principal of the college. All the faculty members of the P.G Dept. of Botany are invited to the seminar. Main purpose for this programme is to discuss regarding –the syllabus, the Examination pattern for mid-semester and End semester, Departmental seminar, facilities available in the Departmental seminar library & Central Libray, the achievements of Alumni and their engagement in various institutions are discussed.

FAREWELL MEETING

Every year, At the end of the session, in the last seminar the department organizes farewell ceremony to bid farewell to the senior honours students by the Juniour students of the department. The seminar is inaugurated by the honorable Principal of the college. All the faculty members of the dept. of Botany are invited in the seminar. Main purpose of this programme is to aware the outgoing students regarding various academic and employable scope after graduation  and P.G.

STUDY TOUR

Yearly at least one study tour is arranged with support of the college. In the study tour programme the students under the guidance of faculty members are required to survey the flora of the adjourning region to collect specimen and prepare a report. This has been a part of B. Sc and M. Sc. curriculum. The department organizes Study tour programmes during the month of December to January every year, to nearby places like Kalinga Ghats , Daringbadi, Bateswar etc. to enrich the students in different spheres. All the honours students of this department along with the faculty members are participating in the event.

Teacher’s day Celebration

Every year, on 5th September, the students of the department organizes Teacher’s day to celebrate the Birthday of Dr. Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan in a grand way. All the students of this department honoured the faculty members during the occasion.

Every year after the completion of admission process of U.G. and P.G. 1ST year students, the controller of Examinations calls a meeting of Board of studies. The Board of studies has a thread ware discussion about the following business:

  1. Suggest methodologies for innovative teaching and evaluation techniques.
  2. Suggest panel of names to the Academic council for appointment of examiners, Question paper setter and moderator.
  3. Prepare syllabi for various courses keeping in view the objectives of the college , interest of the stakeholders and national requirement for consideration and approval of the Academic council.
  4. Coordinate research , teaching, extention and other academic activities in the Department/college.
  5. The Board of studies in each subject is required to prepare Question Bank in each paper and submit it to the controller of Examinations.

After the completion of every semester Examination in undergraduate and post graduate courses, the controller of Examinations call a meeting of Board of conducting Examiners to pass the result. The members of the Board of conducting Examiners after going through the Examiners report and statistics provided by the controller of Examinations recommend to publish the result of the semester Examination.
