The department of History Science College (Auto), Hinjilcut is one of the oldest and glorious departments of the college which was established in the year 1963 with intermediate classes. Initially, the college was affiliated to the Utkal University. In 1965 the UG course of History was opened. In the year 1971, the college was affiliated to Berhampur University with 16 seats for History Honors. From the beginning,it maintained its academic excellence. Since then, the department is producing a large number of meritorious students who have brought name and fame not only in the state level but also in National and International level. The academic records of the department enable the college to become one of the premier colleges in South Odisha, accredited by NAAC, cycle-2 with B+ having autonomous status.
This department has many bonafide faculty members since the inception of hons. Classes. The eminent faculty like Sri L.N. Patro, Sri Achyutananda Das, Sri Srinivas Sahu, Dr. L.M. Ratha,Dr. Brundaban Mishra, Dr. Sudhir Chandra Bholo, Dr. Tripura Mishra, Dr. Priyambada Mohanty, and Dr. Sunil KantaTripathy and other served the department with great care and gave their contribution towards shaping the career of students. Presently Dr. BabitaPatro is serving as the head of the department assisted by young faculty Mr. Akshyaya Kumar Pradhan who have joined by the order of the Govt. and selected by the S.S.B. Odisha in the year 2016-17 and Miss Sandhya Rani Tarai, appointed by the governing body to run the department as a management faculty.
The department is distinctly known for its discipline and sincerity in every aspect of academic activities. The students are not only sincere to their studies, but also are playing their role in development of awareness in reforming the society like eradication of child marriage, caste system, widow re-marriage, free from alcohol etc. Apart from the social service the students of our department are visiting different rural areas and bringing public awareness on sanitation, plantation of trees, Swachha Bharat Abhijan, AIDS etc. The Department is also conducting different events like the Induction ceremony for new students, Teacher’s Day, Study Tour, Extension programme sand the Students farewell function etc. In every month the dept. is conducting a monthly test for degree students which are essential to make them prepared for University under graduate Examinations under C.B.C.S. system.
- Under the guidelines of the U.G.C. and order of the Dept. of Higher Education, Govt. of Odisha, C.B.C.S. Syllabus has been introduced in the Dept. of History from the academic session 2015-16 in the +3 Stream. The department offers Honours, electives as per Berhapmur University curriculum since 2014.
- CBCS Syllabus with core, generic elective and DSE was introduced in UG level from 2015-16.
- Special care is being taken for the completion of courses in time, revision of the courses and for the strict discipline of the students.

Dr. Babita Patro was the product of the Berhampur University. Awarded with Junior Research Fellowship from Indian Council of Historical Research, she has completed her Ph.D from Berhampur University under the guidance of professor Dr. Sisir ku. Panda in 2002. She has more than 25 years of teaching experience. She is the permanent member of South Odisha History Society, South Indian History Congress and Odisha History Congress. DEPARTMENT ACTIVITIES:
- The Department is conducting regular seminars and study tours to different historical places of Odisha. The students have actively participated in the seminars,Which enhances the academic status of the students. The eminent resource persons are also invited to attend the seminars.
- The “Study Tour” is an important venture for the academic development of the students. The students visit the places of historical importance along with faculty members to collecting the historical data, for the examination on the occasion of the study tour and more meritorious studentsare awarded by the department every year as junior researchers. The examination of study tour is an important source of inspiration among the students. The results of the study tour examination is announced by the invited resource personsother than the faculty members.
- The department had conducted the state level seminar sponsored by the U.G.C. on March 2015 which was attended by the scholars of eminence and teacher participants along with top ranking resource persons of Berhampur University and Royal University of Bhutan. The topic of the seminar was “Folk Culture of South Odisha”. Participants of different colleges have presented their papers for the sourvenly published by the department. The student’s participants have also participated in the question answer session of seminar with much zest and zeal.
